Local elections

     
1854
The first local election for the newly incorporated borough council was held on 30 May 1854, at which burgesses were eligible to vote. The elected councillors in turn elected 12 aldermen (two from each ward) on 7 June 1854 and a second election by burgesses was held on 15 June 1854 to fill the vacancies of the 12 aldermen.
