Streets

This ongoing project was actually started in the early 1980s (on 5x3 index cards!) and has developed and grown sporadically since then. The aim is to provide a historical gazetteer of every street and place in the city from Portslade to Rottingdean, Patcham to the sea, in as much detail as is possible and practical for the streets and individual buildings. Districts of the city, manors, parks and other features are also included.
Data for this section are being imported from research files and checked in the process; references are being integrated progressively and further information being added. All suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks to Malcolm Stacey for contributions.

All entries are arranged alphabetically with a page for each initial letter of the place names:

Maps

Brighton, Hove and district have been mapped many times, in many different ways and for a variety of reasons. These pages present a growing selection of maps and street plans

Census districts

These pages list all the streets and places identified in each decennial census from 1841 to 1911, plus the register taken in September 1939 at the start of World War II. Being compiled by statute, these provide the most accurate record of all streets (and in some cases properties). The lists are arranged by the enumeration districts and sub-districts at each census.

Wards

The wards into which Brighton and Hove has been divided for electoral purposes.

Plaques

Brighton was one of the first places outside London to erect plaques to mark the location of birthplaces and residences of notable people. These are identified in the streets pages and are listed here with the names of the people commemorated.
